Volume 1 - May 2008
The dedication ceremony for the Open Space was held on Saturday, May 10, 2008.
In April 2005, the Fond Land Preservation Foundation purchased approximately 500 acres in the City of Los Angeles between the communities of Shadow Hills and La Tuna Canyon. The property was purchased with a down payment with the balance due in April 2007. The Foundation was able to obtain sufficient funds with which to pay off the mortgage in April of 2007 and the land is now owned free and clear. People used to say that they were able to “burn the mortgage”, but the Fond Land Preservation Foundation just recycled it. There are, however, substantial and significant pieces of open space which are available for acquisition and for which additional funds are needed.
Every year the Fond Land Preservation Foundation engages in extensive brush clearance to ensure that it meets the regulations of the City of Los Angeles concerning brush clearance within 200 feet of a residence. Since our property is surrounded by the community, this ongoing effort costs about $10,000 per year. All of this work was completed prior to the fire season in 2007 and prior to the Santa Ana winds, which blew through the San Fernando Valley. The Fond Land Preservation Foundation has already begun its 2008 clearance of brush and will continue to comply with all brush clearance requirements.
